In this article, we will explore the <strong>various forms of water pollution and their repercussions<\/strong> on our health, environment, and future. You will understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationdegaspebeaubien.org\/en\/our-motivation-and-expertise-in-water-conservation\/\">our motivations<\/a> and why it is crucial to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationdegaspebeaubien.org\/en\/how-to-contribute-to-the-preservation-of-our-fresh-water\/\">act in a responsible way in order to preserve our water<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Main Sources of Water Pollution<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>1.1. Organic Waste<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organic pollution is among the most common. It comes from<strong> household, vegetal, and animal waste<\/strong>, as well as excrement. This waste contains bacteria and viruses that can cause microbiological pollution, which represents a risk for our public health. Organic pollution is in fact caused when this <strong>organic waste is dissolved into our water<\/strong>, whether its provenance is natural or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1.2. PFAS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reseau-environnement.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Les-substances-per-et-polyfluoroalkylees-PFAS-Reseau-Environnement.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFAS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refer to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are <strong>synthetic chemicals<\/strong> that have been used for decades for several industrial and commercial applications (ex: waterproofing products, stain-fighting products, anti-adhesive products, food packaging, etc.). The big problem with PFAS is that they break down very slowly after use. These contaminants therefore <strong>remain in the environment for a very long time<\/strong>. They have even been known to be called \u201c<strong>eternal chemicals<\/strong>\u201d.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While drinking water is not the main source of exposure to PFAS, this fact remains concerning. Although PFAS has been a subject of study for years in Quebec and Canada, there is still little data and knowledge on the subject. In April 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/content\/dam\/hc-sc\/documents\/programs\/consultation-draft-objective-per-polyfluoroalkyl-substances-canadian-drinking-water\/overview\/apercu.pdf\">Health Canada set the objective of reducing the population\u2019s exposure to PFAS through drinking water<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ecofiltertek.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ecofilter Tek<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationdegaspebeaubien.org\/fr\/1-an-pour-aquaentrepreneur-quebec\/\">AquaEntrepreneur Qu\u00e9bec <\/a>participant, is at the avant-garde of developing a specialized membrane technology adapted to various industries that has the unique capacity of selectively capturing the PFAS molecules, allowing the clean water to pass through with unequaled efficiency. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3><strong>1.3. Medications<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pharmaceutical products cause <strong>colorless, odorless, but still important and omnipresent pollution<\/strong> in the water. Recent studies have shown that many lakes and rivers worldwide contain medical substances at a<strong> higher level than what is considered safe<\/strong> for humans and aquatic organisms.<\/p>\n<p>How does medication end up in the water? The answer is simple: it is ingested by people, partially metabolised, and the rest is eliminated in wastewater. Some people also dispose of their medications in the toilet.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1.4. They are<strong> too small<\/strong> to be extracted by traditional filtration systems. Because of this, they <strong>make their way into our lakes, rivers, and oceans<\/strong>. Cutting-edge technologies are needed to detect these microplastics that come from the decomposition of larger plastic waste or other commonly consumed products. <\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With their MPConnect product, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abbatekgroup.com\/\">AbbaTek<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wants to rationalize and simplify the analysis of microplastics. To do so, this young enterprise uses automated learning and data science to automate the identification, characterization, and measurement of microplastic particles. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3><strong>1.5. Lead<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Lead is a metal that is naturally present in the environment, whether it be in the soil, the air, or even our food. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/environmental-workplace-health\/reports-publications\/water-quality\/water-talk-minimizing-exposure-lead-drinking-water-distribution-systems.html\">In Canada, lead is not normally found in natural water sources or treated water.<\/a> It is through our<strong> plumbing systems and distribution networks<\/strong> that lead can make its way into our drinking water. This is especially the case in old houses because, up until 1975, The National Plumbing Code of Canada considered lead to be an acceptable metal to use in the conduits.<\/p>\n<p>We now know that consuming water containing lead can constitute <strong>a health risk, especially for children<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1.6. Agriculture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Field crops and livestock farming are sources of chemical pollution. The fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, veterinary medications, and other substances <strong>end up in surface or groundwater<\/strong>, namely because of excessive manure spreading. This chemical pollution drives the proliferation of algae and bacteria causing a lack of oxygenation, a phenomenon known as <strong>eutrophication<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/typhacompany.com\/\">Typha.co<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been working on <strong>Lake Winnipeg\u2019s eutrophication problem<\/strong> since the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquaaction.org\/fr\/nos-programmes\/defi-aquahacking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 AquaHacking Challenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The enterprise extracts cattail fibres that contribute to the eutrophication of the lake. Sustainable harvesting allows them to capture the phosphorus and nitrogen before the plants decompose and reject these nutrients into the water. The fibres collected are used to make gardening mulch, soilless potting mix, and biodegradable flower pots. <br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><strong>2. Main Consequences of Water Pollution <\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>2.1. Disease<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming contaminated water can lead to serious health problems such as diarrhea, Cholera, Hepatitis A, Legionella, Dysentery, and in some cases, even death. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/drinking-water\">World Health Organization<\/a> estimates that <strong>around 485,000 deaths<\/strong> each year can be attributed to diarrheal diseases <strong>caused by the microbiological contamination of our drinking water<\/strong>. It can have devastating consequences on their <strong>neurological and behavioural development<\/strong> (ex: lowering of I.Q.).<\/p>\n<p>For adults, prolonged exposure to lead through drinking water can increase <strong>blood pressure<\/strong> and cause <strong>kidney disease<\/strong>. The long-term effects of this contamination are concerning, bringing to light the crucial need to constantly remain vigilant in terms of the quality of our water, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationdegaspebeaubien.org\/en\/investing-in-water-pays-off\/\">invest in the modernization of our infrastructures<\/a> in order to guarantee safe drinking water for everyone.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The detection of pathogenic bacteria is an important tool to prevent the spreading of diseases. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bioalert.ca\/?lang=fr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>BioAlert<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another AquaEntrepreneur Qu\u00e9bec participant, has invented a new fast and automated testing technology that allows us to obtain lab-quality results directly on site, creating a better management of health and safety, as well as operational costs. <br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3><strong>2.3. Impact on our Ecosystems <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Toxic substances and chemical pollutants impact the balance of our lakes, rivers, and oceans, <strong>degrading aquatic species\u2019 natural habitats<\/strong>. This is seen by a loss of biodiversity, the proliferation of harmful algae, and changes in the food chain. Aquatic ecosystems, essential to the survival of many species, are seriously threatened by water pollution, highlighting the critical importance of preserving this precious resource.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cleancatch.ca\/\">Clean Catch<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> invented the first <strong>PVC-free soft fishing lure<\/strong> made from <strong>100% biodegradable<\/strong> organic biopolymer. This innovation allows fishermen\/women to practice their sport with peace of mind while contributing to the safety of the fish and aquatic life in general. The long-term effects of this exposure are still to be determined, but are a growing source of concern for many experts and healthcare professionals<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hoolaone.com\/fr\/\">Hoola One<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has developed technological solutions to clean zones polluted by plastic that could not be cleaned before, such as beaches. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3><strong>2.5. Abandonment of Riparian Zones <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Water pollution causes the degradation and abandonment of many riparian zones, both in urban and rural areas.
